In order to open with grandeur and panache our 35th edition, the festival’s choir and orchestra, under the direction of its artistic director, Mathieu Lussier, will present a work elaborated by two Lamèque-born artists, playwright Emma Haché and composer Frédéric Chiasson, specially composed to celebrate this important anniversary. The second half of the concert will offer a baroque pantomime based on the music of Antonio Vivaldi. The scenario of this colourful work has been elaborated by the grade II children of L’Étincelle elementary school of Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël (class of Stéphanie Ferron) and will be played on stage by the mimes Bryan Morneau, Lili Gagnon and Emma Haché, accompanied by the soloists of La Mission Saint-Charles Orchestra.

1st EDITION OF THE MATHIEU DUGUAY EARLY MUSIC COMPETITION

Created in order to celebrate the pioneer work of the festival’s founder Mathieu Duguay, and to encourage the development of new talents on the Canadian early music scene, the 1st Mathieu Duguay Early Music Competition was launched during the 2009-2010 season. This concert will present the three finalists of this competition, in performance with the festival’s orchestra under the direction of Hank Knox. The laureates will share up to 3500$ in prizes and the public will be invited to vote to determine the winner of the public award. Brilliant and dramatic works by Locatelli and Handel will complete the evening’s program.

Among the massive output of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, his organ works, in which chorals, fugues and complex polyphonies melt into a pure and perfect music, occupies a privileged place. Young French organ virtuoso Benjamin Alard, award winner of several international competitions, is proposing a journey through the most beautiful works of this corpus, performing Bach’s Clavierübung III, the Dogma in Music. The choir La Mission Saint-Charles, under its director Pierre Lavoie, will dialogue with the organ, singing the transcending faith of these great organ chorals.

Two women portraits, two deep sorrows. Loosing a son, loosing a life’s love. Croatian mezzo soprano Renata Pokupic, in her Canadian recital debut, will give life to the faiths of Ferrandini and Handel’s cantatas heroines. Accompanied by the musicians of La Mission Saint-Charles directed by Mathieu Lussier, this wonderful and warm voice will personify Mary, weeping beside her son’s agony as well as a simple women, drown in the paths of madness, in the brilliant Handel’s « Il Delirio Amoroso ».

Celebrated ensemble Les Boréades de Montréal, under the dynamic leadership of virtuoso flutist Francis Colpron, is proposing compared portraits of two universes: the original and bizarre world of Italian baroque as well as the suave and felted sounds of the French baroque. Sword fights and opera arias, love, tempest and passion will be depicted by the animated and expressive sounds of flutes, violins and harpsichord.
